What Matters

Objective Key Results (OKR’s)

Measure What Matters

Measure What Matters explores a management system based on Objectives and Key Results (OKRs): Objectives are directional, Key Results are how we get there.

Good key results are specific, time-bound, and measurable.

As an MSM Graduate

Objective:

Receive and accept a job offer for a US-based position before 2025

  • In my process of landing a good job offer, some of the challenges I might encounter are the willingness of companies to offer sponsorship and balancing the time I can dedicate to applying with the other responsibilities. To prevent this friction as much as possible, I have started my job search by filtering companies that have sponsored in the past and ensuring I can provide a differentiated value compared to other applicants to the jobs I am applying. My biggest fear is graduating with no certainty of what my corporate future would look like. Because of this, I am making a plan to do build up to that goal. When I achieve my objective, I envision myself celebrating with my parents and grandmothers in South Bend, having dinner at one my favorite restaurants. This will be immensely special considering that my grandmothers have never visited the United States: I want to share this pivotal accomplishment with them.

Personal Life

Objective:

Solidify a lifestyle that improves my physical and mental health

  • With the fast paced rhythm of graduate school, I have recently struggled with being consistent with habits that improve my overall health. To overcome this friction, I will start habit stacking. For example, I will prepare my gym bag right after dinner so I am ready to go the next day. My biggest fear is not being able to find the time to these activities, but at the same time I recognize that it is a necessary balance to avoid burnout. In this case, I feel the process of building the habits is rewarding in itself. My biggest celebration will be feeling stronger and healthier, and having the headspace to do different activities because I am not feeling overwhelmed by anxiety.

Leadership

Objective:

Become a more confident public speaker

  • In the process of becoming a better public speaker, I anticipate my anxiety being one of the biggest challenges and fears. Every time I know I will be exposed to a public speaking scenario, I try to prepare - and even over-prepare - ahead of time, but sometimes it is inevitable that these opportunities come in a more spontaneous form and it has held me back from sharing my knowledge in the past. Because of this, I want to be more proactive and practice my improvisation skills, considering that certainly, it is not only about the wording but also about the tone and energy used to convey a message. Even though it is a never ending learning process, once I feel I have accomplished these key results, I will celebrate by making a fun PPT night with friends. It will be more of a way to recognize all the effort I put in having a learners mindset and being open to acquiring new skills.
